DECEMBER BLAST

It's official: CBS 2 has dubbed this weekend storm "DECEMBER BLAST." When they name it, you know it's big.

I've shoveled the driveway and front walk twice in the past 24 hours, and the landlord is out there right now doing the sidewalk again. Good. It's about time someone other than us took some responsibility around here.

I was hoping today could be a day I just entrenched myself in the couch and watched TV -- some good football, some movies, the second season of Alias -- but the though of having to shovel everything tomorrow got us up and out around noon. I doubt the landlord will do much with the driveway, so we at least had to do that. But it would've been liberating to just let the walk go and have someone else deal with it. I swear, Casey and I are more responsible than the entire house and the landlord, combined.

The plan for the weekend was to get the Christmas tree, but that's got to be put off until tomorrow, so hopefully we'll be able to get down the hill for that. Bryan and Jim were going to come down, but they wisely put that off yesterday because of the weather. We also had toyed with going to the Hamptons this weekend, but we decided a few weeks ago that we'd rather lay low and get the tree up instead. Good thing.

Other than having to get home yesterday at 3 -- and Casey driving home in the dark at 6 -- I can enjoy this snowfall because it's on the weekend. I'd still have to head out to work even with the snowfall if it were a weekday, so the timing of this weather event is fortuitous. The snow is light and pretty, fluffy even. It's not dense and heavy and wet. For the most part, I've been able to dig down to the pavement without much effort, then I can just push the shovel the length of the car to get the snow to the bottom of the driveway.

My favorite thing about the snow is the silence. I walked down to the car last night to get the CDs there so that I could tackle the Great Reorganization (while Casey watched Singles and then, as I suggested, High Fidelity) and the snow reflected the light for an ethereal effect in the stillness. This morning, there were no cars on the street, no one honking to pick people up, no distant hum of the highway. Other than the TV, the only sounds have been the scraping of shovels, the whirring of tires from a car struggling to get up the hill and the occassional purr of an SUV making its way down the street. Even the neighbors have been relatively quiet, and that just makes the day that much better.
