2002 in review

Lots of stuff happened. Most of it, for me, was good. For the rest of America, Dave Barry covered the bulk of it. With cartoons. And in the sports world, ESPN.com's Jeff Merron runs down sex and sports. With pictures.

For me, this is what happened ...

New Year's at Jaime's with the deep fryer (frier?) and Chronology over and over and many (many) vodka tonics. "I AM LOUIS PASTEUR!" ... The Royal Tennenbaums ... Andy-Margret scared us all at Uncle Chic's 60th birthday party ... President Monkey chokes on a pretzel ... An afternoon at Liberty Science Center to acknowledge Six Months ... Signing autographs at the mall with the BlueClaws and Phillies ... My car gets the Boot in J.C. ... The never-ending job hunt (February's MY month. OK, March, I'll get a new job. July, definitely July.) ... Watching the Winter Olympics in Utah, but they seem like so long ago ... So long Waylon ... The Great CD Experiment: Listen to them all, in order, A-Z ... New Orleans! Trivia! Louis Prima's grave! Garden District tour! Casper! Acire! ... Ethan won Survivor at some point, and I watched too much TV in general ... Travises ... A Beautiful Mind ... The WTC Batman Memorial of Light Beams in the Sky ... March Madness and the Irish nearly beat Duke ... Another March week in Florida ... Moom Meets The Parents and we visit Daddy Warbucks' house ... Dave yaks on his birthday ... Mets beat the Pirates on Opening Day ... Pirates beat the Mets on Casey Mental Health Day ... Summer in April??? ... Another BlueClaws season begins ... That drunk guy all over Jaime at Will's party ... I climb Mt. Precipice ... The Cat's Meow ... Laura's wedding in South Bend, Brad's bachelor party in Chicago/Dyersville ... Cowboy Junkies at Irving Plaza ... That day in May when I decided, once and for all, I was getting a new job as soon as possible ... Trying to enjoy Memorial Day weekend with Casey and Kerry and Dave and Jaime in Little Silver despite it all ... Jimmy Rollins blows me off but Larry Bowa and Mike Lieberthal are very nice on the field at Shea ... Walking in the Yankees clubhouse, seeing naked millionaires, stepping on that field ... Seeing Kerouac's fantasy baseball game at the NY Public Library ... The loft bed is lowered, but Sandra and Julia remain on the ceiling (what must Jeff have thought over Thanksgiving?) ... I'm a baseball expert on the radio ... The Summer Road Trip: Little Silver (4th of July), PA Turnpike rest area (saw on CNN that Ted Williams died), Johnstown (PNC Park), Greensburg (The Powerpuff Girls Movie), South Bend (Kregg & Julie & Jack), Chicago (The Palmer House and so much more), South Bend (Brad's wedding) ... A quiet acknowledgement of One Year ... Bruce and Today in Asbury ... Entry No. 500 ... The psycho bitch roomate takes it to another level. And bolts. ... The Bangles. Live. In Concert. For free. At Rye Playland ... American Idol gains steam ... Austin Powers Shazzam! ... Job posting for a new entertainment magazine? Hmm ... YES! YES! OH YES! A NEW JOB! ... The old boss took it well ... Another minor-league baseball season comes to an end, but the majors avoid a strike (hours after I talk about the minors on the radio again) ... Irish football at the Meadowlands: Duff Man! Oh yeah! Ty's first game ... Birthday back at home ... Four years at the paper come to an end ... Back to South Bend for a game. Finally! "It's so pretty here," Heather said, gazing at the smokestacks of Gary ... First day at the new job ... Notre Dame gamewatches at Ship of Fools ... Getting a new apartment ... The Sopranos comes back ... Bryan visits and we're out real late ... My cousin has a kid. Well, his wife does. I have a new second cousin. Or first once removed. Something ... Bruce! Live! In Boston! ... Seeing Bryan's condo, ND-Stanford at the bar, a party, sailing on a cold day, though my trip was short ... The New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge: 11 beacons, two days, 500 miles ... Irish beat Florida State and I still manage to move a lot! ... Angels win the first World Series the first championship of any kind I get to watch as a fan and not an editor in four years ... RIP, Jam Master Jay ... We're in the new apartment! ... Many trips to Target ... Many trips to IKEA ... Irish vs. Navy in Baltimore, a nice college reunion ... We meet Alex, my cousin's kid ... Thanksgiving Eve with my parents ... Thanksgiving in Johnstown ... The weekend in Greensburg ... Three basketball Top 10s in a week go down to the Irish ... John Madden's Sex-A-Strator ... I love iTunes ... The office Christmas (Holiday) Party ... Weekend in D.C. ... Porn "star" wins Survivor ... Dave eludes the cops ... Christmas in L.S. and the evening snow ... A weekend in The Hamptons ... Hosting New Year's with the cat and a few friends ...
