A new look at Christmas

Let's face it. It's not what it once was -- if it ever was. It's not what we think it is or would like it to be.

It's Christmas, with all the carols and hymns and cookies and gifts and warmth and family and shopping and movies and contests. We lament the commercialization, but do not hesitate to watch NBC's It's a Wonderful Life. We complain about the crowds, but race for that open parking space. All of that which is supposed to be bad about the holiday season is as much a part of it as all that's good. In the less-popular It's Christmastime Again Charlie Brown, Sally says it -- "Christmas is about getting all you can while the getting's good." That's a drastic way of putting it, but in a way it holds true.

Behind all that giving is someone getting, and it's not always the less-fortunate, those we buy non-perishable food and winter coats for, those we give money to through the Salvation Army.
