Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 - 11:00 p.m. The tempest outsideThe windows rattle from the howling wind outside. Standing on the patio, we shivered watching the boughs wave at us and creak under all the movement. The leaves one one branch beneath a streetlight cast dancing shadows on the street, an empty and quiet street tonight. It's a soothing relief, actually, and will surely serve as a bit of calm white noise to which we'll fall asleep shortly. If this had come on a weekend, I would've thrown a hurricane party. People could have come over and spent the night. We could've mixed drinks and downed them on the patio in the gusts, then continued inside when we got too cold. But it came a day too early for that, and it's expected to move quickly enough that the rain will cease by midafternoon tomorrow, and the sun will return by the same time Saturday. It could turn into quite a nice last weekend of summer.
