Friday, July 11, 2003 - 5:31 p.m. Remembering Austin, and a great videoSan Antonio to Austin I've been to Austin three times, but the first two visits run together. On both of those, I spent time with Brad and Heather, drinking, and that may be why the two have kind of melded into one. I liked Austin the three times I visited first on the cross-country trip, then again in 2000 for a February vacation when Heather was living and working there and Brad, then consulting in Texas, spent the weekend there instead of flying back to Chicago. The third time was in April 2000 when I returned to see Springsteen the tickets had gone on sale the weekend I was there in February, and Heather insisted I come back for the show. While in Houston I never ventured downtown and I don't remember if I glimpsed the Astrodome from the highway. San Antonio has its highlights, but the Riverwalk can get pretty crowded when it's all anyone knows about the city. That and the Alamo thing nearby. But Austin is a smaller, more manageable city tucked into Hill Country. It's got its reputation as the "live music capital of the world," and on my February 2000 trip, we went to see Bob Schneider (at the time dating one Sandra Bullock) at Antone's after he'd just released his solo debut. We ate wings and played darts and drank and drank and drank. I had burgers and Tex-Mex and in three short visits totaling maybe eight days over two years, I'm satisfied that I saw enough, though I know I didn't see nearly everything. Gonna leave this as a short one today. It's been a busy one and it's already 5:30 and if things keep rolling as they have been (knock on wood), I'll be out of here at a reasonable hour and we might even hit the road to Boston tonight. So for now, watch some ping-pong.
