When Daylight Savings comes to an end
October nights fall early then
Dusk creeps in about five o'clock
and headlights beam down the block

The lawn is blanketed in fallen leaves
an empty clothesline rests on stagnant sheaves
Fresh-cut jack-o-lanterns light the porch
and chimneys again are fire-scorched

Trick-or-treaters will soon come around
and holiday dinners will add a few pounds
It no longer matters what the calendar shows
winter's here, sure as the winds blow
