Thursday, Oct. 02, 2003 - 12:09 p.m. Springsteen at SheaI've written enough about my thoughts on Springsteen's live performances (maybe I'll link later), but there are just a few things to add about last night. 1. It may have been the best show I've seen. So many rarities, and eight out of the 25 songs were concert premieres for me: "Souls of the Departed," "Night," "Tunnel of Love," "Brilliant Disguise," "Johnny 99," "Man's Job," "Who'll Stop the Rain" and "Kitty's Back." "Kitty's Back" is a great bluesy-rock tune from The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle and "Johnny 99" was originally a solo acoustic song from Nebraska that was done up so well with the full band. 2. I was a bit surprised that he pulled out "American Skin (41 Shots)," a song written about the killing of Amadou Diallo in New York several years ago (the NYPD allegedly fired 41 times when Diallo went for something in his pocket; it was believed to be his wallet). Several off-duty cops in the loge section around us booed and shouted "Fuck you!" at the stage throughout the song. A cop in the seat to my left remained quiet, then booed when the song ended. I respected that. I'm fine with people saying what they feel (particularly after paying $75 a ticket), but there are ways to do it without ruining the experience for everyone around you. I didn't clap at the end of the song, in part because of the respectful way the giant young cop next to me refrained from screaming throughout the song. 3. A short conversation from about a third of the way into the show (probably during the slow, quiet "Empty Sky"): DAN: WOMAN SITTING ON CASEY'S RIGHT: 4. At 54, he still rocks the shit out of his music. Pound for pound, year for year (in age), I doubt there are enough performers out there to fill out the nine-member E Street Band who give as much as Bruce does on stage.
