A rough night at work can lead to drinking

Oh man, I don't normally do this.

Tonight was such a bad night at work -- pages late after deadline, stories not moving and such (newspaper stuff) -- that I just had to go out afterwards.

Luckily, my friend Dave was just leaving a friend's house when I called, and he agreed to meet me at our regular bar. That is, he agreed to go out so that I would have a ride home. It was such a bad night, that when our bartender, Sean, who knows us well, brought me a pint of Sam Adams Winter Lager before we'd even said hello, I asked for a shot of Goldschlager.

And I'm not even sure if I spelled it right.

In fact, I'm not even sure how I'm typing this entry. I confess, I'm backspacing.

A lot.

Anywho, I needed that night out -- well, those two hours -- out tonight. I don't regularly do shots when I go out. I don't normally order them myself -- or for myself. I'll go along if a group or a few of us are shooting our liqour, but normally I'm a beer man. But tonight, I needed a shot, a shot to hit me in the head and get my mind off work.

I needed to remember I have friends, which is tough to do when you work nights and weekends and are off on Mondays and Tuesdays.

It was good. Dave and I talked about our recent relationships (read: girl woes). It was ... well, fun. Does that sound sappy?

And we talked about the Giants -- the football Giants, who are playing for the NFC Championship later today, in about 10 hours. I'm a casual fan -- in fact, I want to see them win mainly just so that all my friends (including Sean, the generous bartender) will be happy. I want them to feel the joy and excitement I felt in October watching Mike Hampton mow down the Cardinals when the Mets clinched the National League Pennant.

I still can't believe we had a Subway Series.

So tonight -- which started out so terribly, horrendously bad -- turned out to be pretty good. OK, in fact.

And now I want to go to bed so badly.

Good night.
