The day Charles Schultz died

Sunday afternoon, Pennsylvania Station, the day Charles Schultz died. The marque outside displayed a sad sign: "C'mon, ol' boy, it's time to go home," Charlie Brown said to Snoopy, somber looks on both their faces.

Here, the crowd stands, eyeing the board for their departure times and tracks to Washington, New Orleans, Boston, Bay Head and the Shore, and Niagara Falls. A baby cries behind me, a woman passes with coffee, another with water. They clack by on heels, squeak past in sneakers, shuffle through in loafers. All above the murmur of distant voices and the clearer talk of nearby passengers-to-be or have-been.

Looking down as I write, I only hear these sounds -- and a train coming in -- and smell the perfume of ladies walking by.
